Group Leader Applied Bioinformatics
European Institute of Oncology
Heiko has studied Biophysics in Moscow and Berlin and obtained a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in Copenhagen. As a postdoc, he moved to Milan where he designed celluar systems designed to study the target genes of oncogenic transcription factors. The success of these cellular systems led to a collaboration with Affymetrix (Santa Clara, California) in 1999, the leading manufacturer of GeneChips used to study gene activity in a massively parallel fashion. Therefore, Heiko moved to California where he familiarized with all aspects linked to the use of high throughput technologies in biomedical research, including analysis software design. These early activities turned out to be paradigmatic. Modern biomedical research is ever more penetrated by the use of high throughput technologies based on genome sequences. Consequently, the need for analysis software is growing constantly. Heiko is leading a team of Bioinformaticians developing such software. Heiko has published numerous papers, teaches at universities (Varese, Milano Bicocca, Milano San Raffaele), presented at international conferences as invited speaker, wrote book chapters about the use of high throughput technologies, and is frequently contacted by publishers as a reviewer.
